SOCO Gallery is thrilled to present fourteen new paintings by Clare Rojas. The gallery will host a public opening reception on Wednesday, September 18 from 6 – 8PM. This will be the artist’s second solo exhibition with SOCO Gallery.

While exploring traditional landscape painting through the lens of abstraction, Clare Rojas utilizes subtle hue changes, delicately drawn boundaries and heavy, saturated blocks of color to create her new body of work. The images stretch out on large-scale, linen surfaces which are reminiscent of ancient forests, sheet music and shifting tectonic plates. The symbol of the horizon line is poetically explored, and serves as a foundation to finding meaning, finding balance, out of chaos. Several figurative works will also accompany the abstract paintings, creating a bridge into her realm of the abstract narrative. The resulting exhibition will be an explosion of color and connection. As Rojas states, “We walk on, through the middle of, and below the constant horizons of our worlds and eventually we rise above this line into the unknown… here the horizon ceases to exist.”

Clare Rojas has received numerous accolades for her work, including grants from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Eureka Fellowship Award, and the Artadia Award. Recent projects include a site-specific commission for the Art in Embassies Program in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico (2018), a two-person exhibition with Barry McGee at the Watari Museum, Tokyo, Japan (2017), and a solo exhibition at the Alice Gallery in Brussels, Belgium (2016). Her work is in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Denver Art Museum; American Museum of the Moving Image, NY. Rojas’ work has been reviewed in such publications as the Huffington Post, Artforum International Magazine, Art in America, Interview Magazine, The New York Times, and Art Review. The artist received her BA from Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She lives and works near San Francisco.
