Clare Rojas, Woman In Chair Reading With Fly, 2021, oil on linen, 50 x 40 inches
SOCO Gallery will present a solo booth of large and intimately scaled paintings and works on paper by artist Clare Rojas at Booth 418 at the Armory Show from September 9-12, 2021.
Rojas is a multiracial (half Peruvian), multidisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted deeply in ecofeminism.
The artist explores the sacred feminine through intuitive connections between animals, nature, the spiritual, and political forces that connect and disconnect. Her work strives to articulate the nuance of emotions within narratives and the universality of forms found within our environments.
Detailed intricacies such as subtle hue changes, gracefully drawn boundaries and heavy, saturated blocks of color can either be read from a distance or up close. Rojas' immediately recognizable female figures, animals, flora and fauna, reveal her promise to observe and record the details that surround her.
Metaphorically, her creative practice is the center of a carousel. The characters that revolve around her are her multimedia arms; painting, drawing, narrative, abstraction, figuration, music, film, installation, and writing. She balances all of the mediums within a self-defined construct that embraces the inherent nature of art and the art making process.
Rojas was named one of the “5 Artists on Our Radar This January” (2021) by Artsy.
Created specifically for the Armory Show 2021, the booth presentation will include a balance of figuration, landscape, abstract and narrative.

Congratulations to Summer Wheat on the installation of “Foragers” at the Mint Museum Uptown in Charlotte, North Carolina. The monumental public artwork spans four stories, 3,720 square feet, filling 96 windows. It creates an illusion of stained glass and casts vibrant color across the museum’s atrium space.
“In so many ways, Foragers is a monumental tribute to all those anonymous female makers and laborers who have made North Carolina the place that it is today: the Catawba clay workers, the Cherokee basket makers, the enslaved and freed African-American fishers and farmers, the countless woodworkers, weavers, and quilters,” says Jen Sudul Edwards, PhD, the Mint’s chief curator and curator of contemporary art. We invite you to absorb the light, be transported by the color and contemplate the stories behind “Foragers,” on view until September 2022.
