HALSEY HATHAWAY
THREE’S A CROWD

APRIL 9 - MAY 14, 2022

Opening Reception with the Artist
Saturday, April 9th, 4 - 7 PM

SOCO Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Three’s A Crowd, a solo exhibition by artist Halsey Hathaway at 75 E. Broadway (Unit #203C), New York, NY. The gallery will host a public opening reception with the artist on April 9, 2022 from 4- 7 PM. This will be the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery.

Through use of repeated, overlapping forms and linear structures, Hathaway constructs unique color spaces. In Three’s A Crowd, Hathaway experiments with a darker and more restrained color palette, with close attention paid to the visceral experience. Featuring three new works on canvas, the exhibition explores how shifts of light influence the soft geometry and color structure.

The vertical paintings, medium and large in size and all reciprocal with the human body, are defined by intersecting, curvilinear shapes filled with both stained and densely painted acrylic. The stain on raw canvas absorbs directly into the surface, both matte and permeable. These ethereal spaces work in conjunction with thick and brushy acrylic forms which sit on the surface. John Yau, writing for Hyperallergic, believes that “The colors can shift gradually and suddenly. At times I felt like I was seeing solid and semi-transparent planes, though these categories did not remain fixed while I was looking.”  (John Yau, Hyperallergic. March 19, 2021).  Rich black contrasts and folds into deep pinks and tangerine oranges.  Midnight blue and black  blend and weave into each other, the contrast discernible only through the surface stain and painted texture.  The artist’s color choices are intentional and always surprising.

The viewer is encouraged to visit the work multiple times,  allowing them to explore  a  subjective stream of consciousness and bridging the gap with the changing physical environment. The aim is to emphasize one's perceptions – an exploration into the intersection of the subconscious and perceptual experience.

This is the gallery’s first in a series of exhibitions opening in a New York project space through summer 2022.
