SOCO Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Georgia-based painter Holly Coulis. The gallery will host a public opening reception with the artist on Wednesday, March 27 from 6 – 8PM and an exhibition walkthrough with the artist on Thursday, March 28 at 11AM. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with SOCO Gallery.
Holly Coulis’s gouaches and oil paintings are iconic interpretations of traditional still lifes. Building and expanding beyond Giorgio Morandi, Wayne Thiebaud and Henri Matisse, Coulis paints fields of shadows and reflections reordering the language of still life imagery. Through the use of color, application, and perspective, the artist creates playful compositions that incorporate multiple points of view and complicate preconceived notions of space and transparency. Layers of underpainted colors are revealed around the edge of each subject. Coulis chooses objects in her everyday: fruit and drinking vessels are common with the occasional appearance of junk food, domestic animals and flowers.
