SOCO Gallery is pleased to present Passage, an exhibition of photographs by the native North Carolina artist Linda Foard Roberts. The exhibition will present works from five different series taken over the last decade, all chronicled in a newly published monograph by Radius Books. The artist hosted a pre-release book signing at Paris Photo in November 2016, as well as a sold-out book signing at SOCO Gallery in December 2016. The gallery will host a public opening reception for the artist on Wednesday, May 10th from 6-8PM. This will be the artist’s first solo exhibition with SOCO Gallery.

Linda Foard Roberts’ love of large format photography taken with vintage cameras began at the age of fifteen. Roberts’ striking, yet quiet gelatin silver and pigment prints are able to capture the timeless beauty of her southern surroundings, as well as the larger revelations and explorations of time itself that emanate through the camera lens vis-a-vie people, objects, and landscapes that are often within her intimate, everyday environment. The result is seemingly eternal, timeless, black-and-white photography that exploits the peculiar ability of the camera to produce images that are both extremely present and yet suspended in time. Over the past decade, Roberts has been exploring the inevitable movement of time in life, focusing on memory and the acceptance of transience and imperfection. As she writes in Passage, the new book published by Radius Books, quoting Richard R. Powell: “Nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect.” Her photographs are meant to be read like visual lines in a poem, metaphorical and layered, with each photograph bestowing a deeper meaning upon the next.

Linda Foard Roberts has exhibited her work internationally from Australia to Guatemala, and throughout the United States. Her work was recently included in the exhibition The Energy of Youth: Depicting Childhood at the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the series Passage was exhibited at the Robert Koch Gallery in San Francisco. Photographs from this series have traveled to 34 venues through North Carolina in the exhibition Telling Our Stories, organized by the North Carolina Museum of Art. She is a recipient of a North Carolina Visual Artist Fellowship Grant, and her work is in the permanent collection of the North Carolina Museum of Art, North Carolina; New Orleans Museum of Art, Louisiana; The Norton Museum of Art, Florida, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Louisiana; San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts, California; The Mint Museum, North Carolina; Bank of America Collection; The Harry Ransom Center, Texas; The Bechtler Collection, North Carolina; Gregg Museum of Art and Design, North Carolina, and in numerous private collections throughout the United States and Europe. The artist lives and works in Weddington, North Carolina.
