MARJORIE NORMAN SCHWARZ
MINING A GLITTERING STONE

APRIL 27 – JUNE 8, 2022

Opening Reception with the Artist
Wednesday, April 27, 6 – 8 PM
421 Providence Road

SOCO Gallery is pleased to present Mining a Glittering Stone, twelve new paintings by the Dallas-based artist Marjorie Norman Schwarz. The gallery will host a public opening reception with the artist on April 27, 2022 from 6 - 8PM. This will be Schwarz’s first exhibition with the gallery and is planned in conjunction with 12.26, a contemporary art space in Dallas, TX.

These soft, meditative paintings emanate from a process of discovery exacted through ritualized mark-making and a layering of tonalities.

Each canvas is composed of layers upon layers of delicate and intimate brushstrokes. As if by magic, Schwarz’s suite of portals exude an atmosphere of the ephemeral that bleeds into the eternal.

Through the artist’s deliberate mark making, ethereal visual patterns begin to emerge and fill the room, occasionally recalling a seascape, grassy meadow or vista. Hues slowly direct and release back into the field of these all-over compositions, occasionally fixed by a hint of ground or the rubbing against an edge.

At times, Schwarz’s paintings appear to the viewer as infinite abysses, a place to get lost, to meditate, perhaps conjure a memory, and, if the viewer is lucky, ultimately discover.
