BIO
Twins Nikolai and Simon Haas (b.1984, Austin, TX) create irreverent sculptures that explore themes related to nature, fantasy, and sexuality. Nikolai Haas apprenticed as a master carver and Simon Haas studied blacksmithing and painting at the Rhode Island School of design. Their biomorphic works defy categorization, most often occupying the interstitial space between fine art and functional objects. The brothers began collaborating in 2010, each bringing their respective passions and distinct specialties together. Their works incorporate materials such as marble, bronze, ceramics, beads, porcelain, wood, brass and more. The brothers first came to prominence with their functional design in furniture and home decor, and have since expanded their practice into the realm of architecture, fine art, and the digital space.
The Haas Brother’s first mid-career retrospective, Uncanny Valley, opened in October 2025 at the Cranbrook Art Museum and will travel to the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY, in 2026 and the Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC in 2027. They have had numerous solo exhibitions in the United States and abroad, including Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas, TX; Jeffrey Deitch, Los Angeles, CA; Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York, NY; the Bass Museum of Art in Miami, FL; Lora Reynolds Gallery, Austin, TX; Gallery All, Shanghai, China; Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Chicago, IL; and Galerie Gmurzynska, Zurich, Switzerland Their work was included in the Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York, NY and at the San Jose Museum of Art in San Jose, CA. Their work may be found in the permanent collections of the RISD Museum, Providence, RI, the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York, NY, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY, and LACMA, Los Angeles, CA.
